In fall 2023, I wrote and presented a conference paper about my 2014 experience of choosing the music of composer Morten Lauridsen as the “common reading” for the first-year seminar at California Lutheran University, the program that I was directing at the time. This choice came out of my sudden realization of vocation or calling in the midst of my everyday duties as a director and professor. That crucial decision changed the direction of my teaching and my scholarship, and it also changed my life, to focus on the things that truly matter. Delivering this paper presentation at the October 2023 meeting of the Association of Lutheran College Faculties (ALCF) was so fulfilling to me.
